An area situated 1.5 km (approx. 1 mile) from the Dongzhimen Gate on the second Ring Road in the Chaoyang District of Beijing, China, Sanlitun is the center of diplomatic activity. Kengo Kuma, the Master Planning Architect of the two-block development which will include a hotel and cultural center, selected SHoP to design a retail building for each block. Various design elements consider the constant retail and commercial activity of Sanlitun and include shaped strips of mirror and clear glass that capture the moving energy of the passing cars and pedestrians. While creating a flow of energy and movement, the buildings will allow visitors to experience the interior retail experience as it simultaneously reflects the community’s experience of the plaza.
