BERKELEY GLOBAL CAMPUS
LOCATION / RICHMOND BAY, CA
PHASE / IDEAS COMPETITION AWARDED
SIZE / 5.4 MILLION SF

SHoP’s proposal for the Berkeley Global Campus (BGC) at Richmond Bay focuses on the creation of an environmentally-sensitive, technologically-savvy infrastructure system as the catalyst for “Knowledge Oriented Development.” This vision reconsiders the traditional campus model and instead embraces a paradigm in which academic, residential, commercial, public space, transit, and sensitive ecologies are woven together by an extensive pedestrian and bicycle network. The design will enable connections to the local community and ferry access across the Bay Area, enabling access to San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and SFO International Airport, all while respecting the Richmond Bay site’s rich natural resources. Developed by SHoP with landscape architecture firm Surface Design, the scheme will help establish the BGC as a groundbreaking research environment. With the collaboration of all partners and stakeholders, the Richmond Bay site is well positioned to be the University of California’s next great campus.
