The minimalist style of the clothing designed by the client led to the idea of using light to create a sense of “placelessness”.  The interior is rendered a black void, dissolving the perception of ceiling and floor.  With the datum lines removed, a collection of mostly black clothing is organized through the placement of light objects.  In the store’s sea of black finishes, light becomes the dominant material.  The ambient glow of the light boxes allows the enclosure to melt into darkness, while super focused spot illumination showcases the highly articulated structure and materiality of the clothing itself.  Cantilevered acrylic shelving lit with fiber optics float displays into the space.  The overall effect is to create an ethereal environment for the merchandise.  Published in Interior Design (April ‘98), recipient 1998 LUMEN Award.
