DIFFA INSTALLATION
LOCATION / NEW YORK, NY
PHASE / COMPLETED 2009
SIZE / N/A

Created for the 2009 Dining by Design event hosted by the Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids (DIFFA).  In collaboration with Supima Cotton for The New York Times.  Supima requested a design that would highlight the cotton plant and focus attention on the origins of the material. The cotton “boll”   has a beautiful quatrefoil petal structure, which SHoP exploited on a large scale as the design motif for a screen encircling a dining booth.  The installation was designed to pack flat for storage and shipping, and for ease of assembly, all the framing joints are identical and can be put together without tools. The petal pieces snap together by hand, and the pillows are held on with Velcro. Different modules can be used to reconfigure the structure—for instance, a typical end module can be substituted for the bench support to create a freestanding screen, or a shelf can be added at counter height to display literature.
