New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology is located at the heart of the industry it serves. The Joyce F. Brown Academic Building reveals and reinforces that connection.

In addition to supporting a world-class learning environment, a primary goal of the design is to create an iconic statement that contributes to creating a fresh and lasting identity for the Fashion Institute of Technology within Manhattan’s celebrated Garment District. Conceived as a new gateway to the existing mid-century modern campus, the Joyce F. Brown Building also openly showcases for the first time the school’s dynamism, allowing visitors, sidewalk passersby and the students themselves to experience and celebrate the full creative presence of this venerable New York institution.

Programs contained within the new space include classrooms, administrative offices, review and exhibition spaces, and a sunny new indoor quad that will serve as a center for student life.
The view from the sidewalk into the knitting lab—the largest at any school in the country—is a central part of the strategy to make the work and energy of FIT more visible.
