SHoP’s contribution to The Wharf in Washington, D.C. will add a new pedestrian-focused environment to that popular waterfront district.

The 11-story mixed-use office, dining, and retail complex will float above a welcoming public plaza. The massing of the building is organized as an expression of its functions. At the base, glass-walled retail “islands” create circulation pathways that weave through the site, connecting Maine Avenue to the waterfront. An articulated ceiling in these spaces draws the public toward a day-lit central plaza.

The oculus-lit public space at the center of the design serves as a civic threshold for the new buildings and opens directly on the lively new waterfront.
